A content gap is a piece of demand your site doesn't adequately answer — a topic, question, or intent that people are searching for, where your content is either missing or too thin to satisfy them. Close the gap and you serve demand that was previously leaking away.
The term is used loosely in SEO, which causes confusion. Some tools mean "keywords your competitors rank for and you don't." Others mean "topics absent from your site." The most useful definition starts from one place: real demand that your content fails to meet.
Content gap vs. intent gap
These two terms overlap, and it's worth keeping them distinct.
- A content gap is usually about missing or insufficient content — there's no page, or no section, addressing a topic in demand.
- An intent gap is narrower: a page that does exist and does rank, but answers the intent behind a query incompletely or off-target.
